So I have finally broke down and created my own blog site. I have never really liked the thought of a personal blog site since, to me, it borders on narcissism. But, as time goes by, I have realized that I need a place to store my medieval scrolls and other projects that I have made for the SCA, friends, family, and perhaps…to sell. So here I am, setting up my first blog. This is not my first website…oh no, not by a long shot. In 1997 I ran a small web-server from my office at Beloit College where I showcased some of my then current interests (at that point in time I was still getting over my 1970’s fear of nuclear war and my site was devoted to survival).
I started doing calligraphy back when I was 16 or 17 years old. My mother had an old art case that housed her oil paints, calligraphy nibs and ink. In that case was an old art book on how to do calligraphy and from there I taught myself how to write fancy letters. Move up a few years to when I was 19 years old and I was actually commissioned to create several poster board sized placards for special engagements at the Deli on the Green (located inside of Honey Creek Mall, Terre Haute, Indiana. Sadly it is no longer there)…much to the chagrin of the art student (Lisa) who worked there with me.
Other interests I will present on my blog are woodworking, blacksmithing, metal working, mead making and other medieval arts and sciences. My dad helped stir these interests and if he lived closer, I am sure he would want to help. Back in those days you had the library which, depending on where you lived and how big or small your library was, dictated what you might be able to find on the subjects. I blame the internet for rekindling these interests and making it so easy to find and learn just about anything I could possibly ever want to do.
I don’t plan on doing daily updates, but there will be a flurry of updates to the side bar while I attempt to get all my art loaded and in one spot. I hope to present various lessons, ideas and thoughts as the time goes by.
So here I go…
